Kona licensing office to extend hours
The County of Hawaii Vehicle Registration and Licensing Office in Kailua-Kona will be temporarily extending its regular hours in an effort to cut into the county’s backlog of license renewals.
Beginning today and contuining through July 29, office hours will be from 6:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., allowing the office to open an hour early and close an hour later. Walk-ins will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Patrons with appointments will be given preference.
In addition to extended hours, the office will be open from 7:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. on July 31 to service expired licenses and state IDs.
Virtual talk to cover Pono Fishing
Learn about Pono fishing on Hawaii Island during a free virtual webinar at 6 p.m. this evening.
John Kahiapo and C.J. Kow, Hawaii Island education specialists from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, will discuss responsible fishing methods and how to foster good stewardship of our oceans and wildlife. The one-hour Zoom event is suitable for ages 8 and older.

Bank holding Slippah Drive
First Hawaiian Bank is holding a statewide Slippah Drive for Child &Family Service.
In conjunction with the opening of bank’s new Ewa Beach Branch on Oahu, FHB employees donated the first 800 new pairs of slippers to CFS, kicking off the drive, which runs through Aug. 20.
Keiki to kupuna are in need of slippers, all sizes and any color. Slipper donations made on the Big Island will stay on the island. The community is invited to drop off donations of new pairs of slippers at any of First Hawaiian Bank’s 49 Branches statewide.
“We couldn’t be more appreciative to the staff of First Hawaiian Bank and their incredible effort behind this slipper drive. Hundreds of people statewide will be benefiting from this drive, which kicks off with the reopening of the Ewa Branch at its new location. We’re so humbled to be recipients of your generosity,” said Karen Tan, Child &Family Service president and CEO.
Solid Waste transfer stations closed today
Hawaii County Solid Waste Transfer Stations islandide will be closed today for quarterly employee safety training.
The Reload Facility, located at the South Hilo Sanitary Landfill, and the West Hawaii Sanitary Landfill, located in Waikoloa, will be open during regular business hours from 7 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. daily.
